SOUTH AFRICAN FIREARMS PERMIT

 

APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS

 

The basic regulations for obtaining a Temporary Import or In-Transit permit are as follows :

 

bullet

No more than ONE firearm or shotgun per caliber or guage

 

bullet

Only 200 rounds of ammunition for each permitted rifle or shotgun

 

bullet

No ammunition for other firearms permitted - i.e. do not take ammunition over for your PH unless you are taking a firearm of the same caliber

 

bullet

You may only import two shotguns if they are of different gauges

 

bullet

Firearms must bear the manufacturer's serial number or any other mark by which the firearm can be identified. The identification number must be stamped and the mark affixed in the prescribed manner on the barrel, the frame or the receiver of the firearm

 

bullet

Handguns are permitted into the country but only for hunting purposes. Any foreign visitor who wishes to take a hangun into South Africa must be in possession of a letter from a registered association of his/her country of residence, stating that he/she is a registered member of the association and that the handgun will be used exclusively for hunting purposes

 

bullet

Firearms which are prohibited from being imported into South Africa are :
bullet

Any fully automatic weapon

bullet

Any semi-automatic weapon

bullet

Semi-automatic shotguns

bullet

Handguns for self-defense

bullet

Weapons which fall under military categories
